A 58 year old man named Bablu Sardar died at the Satkhira Police Detective Branch (DB) jail. Police say he committed suicide with a rope around his neck. However, the relatives of the deceased claimed that Bablu had been tortured to death.
Bablu Sardar died at the DB Police Jail in Satkhira Police Lines sometime on Saturday night. Satkhira Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sheikh Sohail and Constable Shariful Islam had been suspended. He said the matter would be investigated.
Bablu Sardar’s house is in Basantapur village of Debhata upazila of Satkhira. His father was the late heroic freedom fighter Juran Sardar.
According to Satkhira Detective Inspector Yasin Alam Chowdhury, 45 bottles of Phensidyl were recovered from Bablu Sardar’s house at around 11am yesterday.

He was arrested in this incident. Later in the afternoon, the DB police sub-inspector filed a case against him under the Narcotics Control Act at Debhata police station. He was taken to Satkhira DB office for questioning. He was kept in jail at night. At one point in the night, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a prison window with a rope around his waist.
However, Bablu’s daughter Sultana Munni claimed that a woman came to their house around 10 am yesterday. The woman entered the house and met her father Bablu Sardar. Later, four to five persons identified as DB police recovered 45 bottles of Phensidyl from his father’s house and arrested his father.
At that time his father was beaten. When his father was taken into custody, he was completely healthy. His father died as a result of torture. Munni claimed that the woman who came to his father had left Phensidyl in the house.
Bablu’s wife Sahanara Khatun said, “My husband cannot commit suicide. I want justice for the incident, ”said Sheikh Obaidullah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debhata Police Station. The accused was taken to the Satkhira DB police office to be kept in their custody.
Satkhira Detective Police Inspector Yasin Alam Chowdhury said an inquest report was prepared on the body of Bablu Sardar in the presence of Executive Magistrate Akhter Hossain and doctor Jayant Sarkar at around 1pm yesterday. Later the body was sent to the morgue of Satkhira Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
